Jessie Duarte, leader of The ANC of South Africa, has died. In South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC) announced the death of Jessie Duarte, at the age of 68. The appointed secretary general of the ANC in May 2021, before stepping back in November to treat cancer, she was a pillar of the ruling party.

Jessie Duarte served her party and her country as ambassador to Mozambique between 1999 and 2003. A long-time activist, she was also Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant. Jessie Duarte will receive a special official category two state funeral.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to the memory of African National Congress Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte, who died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

She praised the deceased for her struggle for women’s rights during and after the struggle against apartheid. “Comrade Jessie was a faithful, dedicated, and committed leader of the African National Congress,” Ramaphosa added.

Yasmin Jessie Duarte spent the rest of her career serving the interests of her party. She joined the National Executive Committee of the ANC in 1997 and became Deputy Secretary General in 2012. She embodies those pillars of the ANC who know perfectly the mysteries of the party and know how to cross the political eras, despite the internal quarrels.
