According to a tweet from Marty McGee of the Daily Racing Form, who confirmed the information with Mena’s close friend, trainer Al Stall,
Jr., journeyman jockey Miguel Mena was struck and killed as a passerby on Interstate 64 near Louisville on the evening of October 31.
Mena, 34, started riding in this country in 2003, posting his first win at Gulfstream Park that September.
According to his biography on the Kinland website, Mena’s father, Jose, was also a jockey when his uncle was a trainer.

“I always went on the race track,” he said. “I was watching my father ride and I wanted to do what he was doing. When I was a kid I had the impression in my head that I was going to be a jockey. ”
According to Kinland’s biography, Mena was making horses at the age of 11 and at the age of 14, she started at her local Peruvian George Bernardini Youri Jockey School, whose graduates included Edgar Prado and Rafael Bejarano.
