Actress Sally Ann Howes Dies at 91 – What Happened With Her

Sally Ann Howes, who starred in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and My Fair Lady, has died aged 91, her family has confirmed. The Tony Award-winning actress first appeared on screen aged 12, and enjoyed a career that spanned six decades.

Born into show business, the daughter of a popular London comedian and his singing-actress wife, Ms. Howes was cast in her first movie at 12 and had a stage, screen and television career that spanned six decades. She starred in some 140 productions — musicals and plays in New York and London, and Hollywood and television movies and mini-series.

Born in London to actors Bobby Howes and Patricia Malone, Howes spent much of her childhood at the family’s home in Hertfordshire when London was evacuated during World War II.

At the age of 12 she made her screen debut in 1943 film “Thursday’s Child,” after being recommended by a casting agent friend of her father’s. The film, about a schoolgirl who becomes a successful child actor, was in many ways prophetic, launching Howes’ film career.

She was soon contracted by Ealing Studios, where she starred in films including “Dead of Night” opposite Michael Redgrave.

Speaking in 2007, she recalled: “It was absolutely wonderful when you’re in probably the greatest show that’s ever been written. It’s certainly amongst the top 10. Sally was previously married to Broadway composer Richard Adler and Andrew Maree before tying the knot with British literary agent Douglas Rae in 1973.
